110715 “Tears Of Heaven” Is The No. 3 Most Influential Musical In Attracting Foreigners – And What Is No. 1?

“Xiahzart” Kim Junsu has once again proven this year that he is the leading man in the hallyu musical scene.

Interpark revealed that for the first half of this year, among the top 5 musicals in Korea that attracted the most foreign visitors, Kim Junsu’s “Mozart!” and “Tears Of Heaven” took 1st and 3rd place respectively.

In this ranking, the project that attracted the most attention was “Tears Of Heaven.”

Composed by world famous musician Frank Wildhorn, and directed by Gabriel Barre, who won numerous awards for “Memphis,” “Sweeny Todd” and others, “Tears of Heaven” was a hot topic before it even started its run. However, due to its simple storyline and unconvincing setting, it was criticised as having “limited creativity” and being “an imitation “Miss Saigon.””

During then, there were critics that said “this musical is about a man who is looking for a pure love and  humane “Korean Romance,” and although it has touching and emotional music as well as a creative stage, the weak plot is regrettable.”

A musical that seemed to lack a sense of completion and reality, “Tears Of Heaven” managed to take 3rd place in the foreign audience ranking. If not for “hallyu star” Kim Junsu, this would not have been possible.

Kim Junsu injected life into the simple storyline, and improved upon the sense of completion of the entire musical. His outstanding voice and mature acting skills enchanted the audiences. If not for him, this musical would have been normal, and not as spectacular as it had become.

The promotion for “Tears of Heaven” is especially meaningful because it is the only local (Korean) production that was recognised as having the highest foreign audience. In this reality where adapted musicals are the mainstream, it introduces the foreign audiences to an original Korean creative musical, which is a considerable gain.

To ensure the project’s quality and audience numbers, Kim Junsu is diligent when choosing projects to work on and participate in, and has earned praise for this. His choice to participate in a local creative production, and the energy he gradually injected into the musical is imaginable.

With Kim Junsu spearheading it, the growth of the musical hallyu wave looks positive. Musical production companies who are targeting the gradually growing crowd of foreign audiences have expressed that they will be expanding on the promotional efforts for the foreign crowd.

“There have always been audiences from countries like Japan, China and others that have come to watch hallyu stars, but that was before Kim Junsu showed his true power. And now he is the top sell-out guarantee in musicals.”

It is truly impressive that both of Kim Junsu’s projects were ranked as 1st and 3rd for the highest number of foreign audiences.

110712 Flipping Over Castle Walls In Search of Golden Star Xiahzart

To Kim Junsu, the musical “Mozart!” was  an unforgettable performance he has had. During the earlier half of  2010, He had no activities since he had left TVXQ. When he was offered  to act in a musical, he had wanted to reject the role, as he was worried  about being in the unfamiliar musical industry. He tried to put himself  in Mozart’s shoes. Mozart went with his father’s wishes, and travelled  from Salzburg to Vienna, just to write music for the archbishop. Even  though he was a genius, and lived a luxurious life, but that made him  fell into deep misery and unfortunate.

The scene where Mozart left Vienna,  flipping the high castle walls in search of the “golden star”, he  finally lived for himself, and not for his father. Kim Junsu was moved  by the song “Why can’t you love me”, sung by Mozart.

Finally, Kim  Junsu found himself familiar to the singing and acting techniques in a  musical; he perfectly displayed Mozart’s character. He felt blessed,  even though he was tired. The audience was also much affected as they  watched his performance; when Kim Junsu played the contradicting  character of music genius Mozart, the audience laughed together with the  happy Mozart, and teared when Mozart cried. When the stage curtains  fell each time, the audience would do a standing ovation. This year,  during the curtain call in “Mozart!”, he was reminded of that  unforgettable moment he had during last year’s performance. The popular  idol star Xiah Junsu has successfully transformed into musical star Kim  Junsu.

Currently, Kim Junsu, who has  performed “Mozart!” twice, is ambitious. Also being a member of JYJ, he  would like to try acting in dramas and movies. He would be performing in  another musical, which would be different from “Mozart!” and “Tears of  Heaven”, and hopes that he would still be able to keep up with  his dance steps. He hopes to take a step at a time, in achieving his own  goals.

To me, this stage bears a special meaning.” Also, “My heart feels heavy, having to part with “Mozart!” again.  I feel like I give 120% in my performances for “Mozart!” and I’m really thankful for the audiences and the passionate support they have given me,” he expressed with deep emotion.

110611 Growing Into A “Genius,” The Perfect “Mozart” Kim Junsu

The hottest topic in the musical industry last year was of course, the appearance of ‘Kim Junsu(24)’. As one who had lived till then as ‘Xiah Junsu’, a member of a popular idol group that threw Asia into a frenzy, he began a new challenge as ‘Kim Junsu’, breaking the walls that confined him into a certain image. With his amazing vocal talent and strong ticket power, coupled with acting that goes above and beyond what anyone expected, he quickly became a ‘Star of the Musical Industry’. And he has decided to once more stand on stage as Mozart.

It’s not uncommon to see idol stars performing in musicals anymore. These days, when looking at the cast list for musicals, we can see a large number of idol stars’ names. With a loyal fan base gathering to support the performance of their idols, it invigorates the industry as well as the ticket sales, and is beneficial for foreign expansion as well. Therefore, (idol stars) are now a necessity. From the point of view of the wanting to expand the industry and bringing musicals to the masses, idol singers’ performances are very welcome.

However, there is a part of society that believes that this is simply a stage created for “fans” instead of prioritizing the works or the acting. The criticism towards a portion of the actors that get to appear because of their “name value” has been great. Therefore, for an actor who started out as an idol singer, the prejudiced view of “how good can they be, let’s see how they fare” is against them.

Group JYJ’s member Kim Junsu used his own abilities, and has completely erased these kinds of doubts and unreliable stereotypes. In January of 2010, with the musical “Mozart!” Kim Junsu took his first step into the musical industry and swept the newcomer awards at both “The Musical Awards” and “Korea Musical Awards,” gaining recognition for his success. He also received praise from the audiences as well as critics, and is not viewed as an “idol star” but as “Mozart-playing Kim Junsu.” Following that, with “Tears of Heaven,” he reinforced his position in the musical world as he was nominated together with Cho Seung Woo, Ryu Jung Han, Jeong Seong Hwa, Hong Kwang Ho as Best Male Musical Actor.

The reason he has received such high praises for both his works is because of his ability to hold his own against the most famous musical actors in “Mozart!” even earning the moniker “Xiahzart,” a perfect interpretation of the musical genius. The Austrian musical “Mozart!” which was based off Mozart’s life: “Wolfgang”—the main body, and “Amadeus” the skill foundation, creates a story by blending these two components. Mozart’s life and love, thirst for freedom, and his conflicts with his father Leopold, a man who uses his own unique way of loving his son, are interpreted in a dramatic fashion. One would never be able to achieve the true meaning of this story just by singing well, or by sticking to the script.

“To me, “Mozart!” is not just a simple musical, but has a deeper meaning. It is the project that allowed me to face the audiences as a “musical actor,” and it is also a place where I could perform again, a place that welcomed me. I really wanted to, so I told myself that if the opportunity arises, I would want to stand on the musical stage again, regardless of criticism or praise. When I look back (at my performances,) there are many places where I am lacking. So this year, I want to work hard to show a more mature side.’

“Mozart” was the first project where he took to the stage as “Kim Junsu,” and therefore has gotten an extremely passionate reception. To show an even better stage compared to the last performance, he is currently giving his all in practices. “Mozart” director Yoo Hui Song said, “Working with him last year, he was praised as the ‘musical prodigy,’ but now, he has surpassed that.” And also said, “He seems to have more emotion than the other actors, and has impressive learning abilities. I’m really fortunate to be working with him,” praising Kim Junsu.

With these two projects, Kim Junsu has been hailed as the “Musical Prodigy,” “Xiahzart,” and “Genius.” The jealous looks, flippant prejudices and all the conflicts that have gathered like a storm, have slowly subsided with his show of “hard work” and “true potential.” ’I want to keep walking down my path / Love me / For who I am.’ It feels as though he sings his songs with everything he’s got, even his soul, as the lyrics seem to be coming from his own heart. Kim Junsu, the musical actor, has only just begun walking down his path.
