On the 20th, a press conference was held for the ‘Seoul Drama Awards 2011′(SDA 2011) at the Press Center in Seoul. SDA created the ‘Hallyu Drama Award’ last year. The awards are given to the domestic drama and actor who helped most with the expansion and exportation of the Hallyu Wave, and 49 productions, excluding short dramas and morning dramas, that began airing between April 1st, 2010 and April 30th, 2011 and was either exported to 10 overseas countries or brought in sales of over 3 million USD were nominated.
There are a total of seven categories for the award, Best Director, Best Screenwriter, Best Actor and Actress, Best Theme Song, Best Production and Second Best Production, and KBS’ ‘SungKyunKwan Scandal’ and SBS’ ‘Secret Garden’ are expected to shine as they have been nominated in all seven categories.
Other than these two productions, KBS’ ‘Baker King Kim Tak Goo’, ‘Mary Stayed Out All Night’, ‘Dream High’, MBC’s ‘Dong-i’, ‘Queen Of Reversal’, ‘My Princess’, ‘Kim Suro’ and SBS’ ‘Giant’, ‘Athena: Goddess of War’, ‘My Girlfriend is Gumiho’ and ‘Bad Boy’ have been nominated for the Best Production Award for doing well in foreign exports. SBS has the most productions nominated out of the three broadcasting companies with five nominated dramas.
The most anticipated battle of the stars is for the Best Actor Award, with Hyun Bin (Secret Garden), Park Yoochun (SungKyunKwan Scandal), Jang Geun Seok (Mary Stayed Out All Night), Song Seung Hun (My Princess) and Kang Ji Hwan (Coffee House) nominated. As the most popular stars of Korea have all been nominated, a fierce tug of war is expected from the category with Hallyu fans helping to determine who wins the award.
For the Best Actress Award, Ha Ji Won (Secret Garden), Park Min Young (SungKyunKwan Scandal), Moon Geun Young (Mary Stayed Out All Night), Kim Tae Hee (My Princess) and Lee Yo Won (49 Days) have been nominated.

The winners will be decided by a 7:3 ratio of votes from Hallyu fans on the English site of Korea.com (http://en.korea.com) and votes from overseas buyers of Korean drama contents. However, the Best Theme Song Award will be chosen by a ratio of 2:5:3 of votes from Cyworld Music’ drama OST poll, votes from Korea.com netizens and votes from the buyers. The Best Director Award and Best Screenwriter Award will be chosen by votes from domestic reporters.
There are worries surrounding the awards ceremony as well. Though the method of choosing nominations and giving international fans the power to choose the winner through an online vote fits the title of the ‘Hallyu Drama Award’, there are worries that some of the nominations were not high quality products. Considering the fact that productions such as ‘Mary Stayed Out All Night’, ‘Dong-i’, ‘My Princess’ and ‘Athena:Goddess of War’, dramas that received harsh criticism domestically, many worry that these nominations will not have a good influence on the Hallyu Wave in the long run.
Professor Yoon Seok Jin stated, “In the nomination process, we felt that Hallyu drama play a big role in becoming a benchmark for dramas in Asia,” and “A drama is not a film of amusement, it is a way to learn about that country’s culture. Therefore, we believe that much consideration should be put into the production of these dramas in the future.”
Meanwhile, the sixth ‘Seoul Drama Awards 2011′ is an international award for TV dramas that will be held at the KBS Hall in Yeoido at 5:20pm on August 31st and will be aired live on SBS.
