110411 Star Interview – JYJ Kim Jaejoong “In The Process Of Overcoming Loneliness With Music”

JYJ member Kim Jaejoong. When I met him, he was cheerful, his voice full of energy. He revealed that he “drank a few glasses of alcohol” during the interview just before this, and he plans to go for a “second round” during this interview.

His previous interview ended in a café on Seoul Shinmun Road. We then moved on to a pub located in where he used to live in, Samseong-dong. In the car on the way to the location, in an effort to ease the tension, he started off with the recent concerns he has, which are the misunderstandings and truths behind the Japan earthquake and radiation, even backed up with his knowledge on the matter. “Do you read a lot of news articles and books?” When asked, his reply was, “I learn more from people than from books”.

After we arrived at the pub, he laid out several mobile phones on the aluminum table. There were 6 mobile phones, including those used in Japan. There is no differentiation between which phones are for work and which are for personal use. He deleted many of his phone contacts as well, which accumulated to more than 1000 at one point.

“Ever since I walked my own road with my own abilities, one by one people distanced themselves away from me. What is regretful, is that because of the disappointment I felt, I did not keep in contact with them, and now it seems that I have lesser people around me… but I still have the members and fans.”

Kim Jaejoong’s words encompassed a kind of complexity. His Twitter profile reads “JYJ from TVXQ”, and on the day of the interview he tweeted the letters “JYJ.” Is this the fusion of the past and the present, of dreams and reality? “TVXQ was my beginning, this is a fact that is obvious and will never change. There really isn’t any special meaning; same as with tweeting “JYJ”, it was just that when I woke up in the morning, I realized everything in my life involves JYJ, just this feeling. And the full stop at the end? Mm, this really has no other special meaning… haha”.

On this day, he mentioned that he revealed personal stories like ‘The 4 Girlfriends I’ve Dated Before’ in previous other interviews. He also revealed about his complicated family history, but what he really wanted to talk about, was music.

“I learnt a lot as I directed the Thailand Concert. From then on, the flowery term “Concert Director” has many troubling connotations attached to it. If everything goes well, it is all thanks to the joint effort of all staff, and if anything goes wrong, it will be because of me, this is something worrying as well. Since I have made up my mind, I will want to bear all the responsibility. Before the performance, I made it a point to do a detailed check on everything, from the stage layout to the mobile passageways. Fortunately everything ended smoothly, in actual fact it’s all thanks to Junsu and Yoochun. Haha”

JYJ met with more than 22 000 fans at the “World Tour 2011” in Bangkok’s Impact Arena on 2nd and 3rd April. Kim Jaejoong worked with the staff on every aspect of the concert, from lightings, wiring to costumes. In order to match the timing for the shifting of the stage for the next layout, he was busy holding the stopwatch under the stage.

“Because I am a singer that sings, I will always have concerns like ‘What will happen if it was done like this?’ If I am able to direct often in the future, in order to present a more complete stage, shouldn’t I be producing it in such a way?”

This world tour will make its way around Asia and main cities in North America, and then finish in Korea on 11th and 12th June. Kim Jaejoong is an amateur director, but he is confident of improving one step at a time. The revelation of JYJ members’ self compositions is also a special present for the fans.

“Fans should be able to sense, that our recent music direction is slightly differing from previous. There weren’t songs like ‘Fallen Leaves’ in the past. In fact, we want to be able to produce songs without a beat in them. Because I want to keep pursuing change, I am now learning about harmony. To produce songs, it is important to have theory foundation.

As time passed, and the glasses of soju being emptied, compared to the joking words previously, his words now exposed the inner feelings he hid. He talked about his feelings towards the issues with his previous company, colleagues and juniors who are changing little by little, as well as the emotional barrier he learnt to build to resist the hurt he faces. He repeatedly mentioned that he wanted to try everything, just like his members, engaging in many different kinds of activities.

He also revealed the hope and anticipation he has of being able to regularly meet his fans through TV broadcasts after the problems with his previous company dies down. But this dream has not been realized. The image of him, who would sometimes tear during fanmeetings, came to mind. When asked if he was lonely, he answered with laughter instead.

“Where and how do I meet the fans? To tell you the truth, this is what has been troubling me the most recently. I believe everything will be fine. I plan to sing forever, so I must never be worn out, haha.”

JYJ Jaejoong, Explains His Scandals with Top Stars of Japan. “They All Have Proper Lovers”

(T/N: Literally, “They Are All Those Who Have Owners.” In Korea, the word 임자, literally translated as “owner,” is a fun and colloquial way of referring to one’s romantic partner.)

JYJ’s Hero Jaejooong himself explained his run of rumors of romance with Japan’s top stars.

Jaejoong recently confessed in the interview with Daily Sports about the rumors of dating Hamasaki Ayumi and another top model and actress, simply as is (T/N: literally, “without adding or subtracting”).

He revealed: “It is true that I know Hamasaki Ayumi personally. After we first met at the A-nation Concerts, which Japan’s Avex of which Ayumi is an affiliate holds every summer, we are contacting each other. However, our relationship is not one that those around us believe it to be.”

Nonetheless, the two were mired in a scandal last October. That is because Ayumi purposefully visited Korea in order to watch Jaejoong’s Showcase Performance despite her busy schedule. Jaejoong explained: “At the time, Ayumi and another of my Japanese artist friend (kindly) visited me. I thought that it was a friendship as between musicians. Also, last January Ayumi has even made a surprise announcement of marriage.” Ayumi has revealed through Twitter that she has married with an actor of Austrian descent.

On the scandal with another of Japan’s model/actress, Jaejoong revealed the behind story, saying that the counterpart was “Yamada Yu.” He explained: “Yamada Yu, along with Yamamini coopera Tomohisa and others, is one of my very close friends. After our performance in Los Angeles, I met her in the after-party and (from then) built our friendship. As is well-known already, she is someone who even has a very famous boyfriend named Oguri Shun.”

Jaejoong said: “In conclusion, right now I don’t have a girlfriend and so am spending all of my time at home. I think that my learning Japanese diligently all this while and being candid (T/N: literally, “having shown a candid self”) in meeting with Japanese entertainers were the impetus for our building friendships with each other.”

Exclusive Interview with Junsu: On Life, On His Current and Future Goals

Through pain, I learned life.

Parting with TVXQ…

Challenge to be Musical Actor…

“I’ve come to learn that all problems stem from not making myself grow but rather being satisfied, saying “this much, should be okay.”

Group JYJ’s Kim Junsu, who is broadening his domain from idol star into a musical actor, opened up his heart in the interview with Focus Shinmum on the 11th, saying “I, too, am a human being before I am a singer.” He has conquered the wounds he endured through the separation process with TVXQ last year by immersing himself into the Musical “Mozart.” Following that, through the musical “Tears of Heaven,” he flowered once more as a musical actor “Kim Junsu.” He said: “I became a much stronger, mature man.” Many people know him as born on January 1 of 1987, but in truth he is born on the year of the Tiger, on December 15th of 1986, as a twin (his older brother is Zuno). He debuted as TVXQ when he was a 2nd year student in high school and now, he’s become a young man of 25.

“While singing the “I needed to learn” in the first scene of the 2nd act of Tears of Heaven, I felt moved at the thought that ‘such is life.’  A situation in which one needs to kill another person in order for myself to live, in order to live and to meet a person that I love, is not something that only happens in war.”

To Kim Junsu, musical is a teacher that teaches life. “Sadder than the fact that it is a society of competition in which one must fight with the other to win is the (fact that we have) circumstances in which one must learn how to push others down in order to survive with those methods.”

Junsu thought of the “good sportsmanship” (T/N: literally, “competition in good faith”) as a method to cure the social conditions like today that goads one to become angry and lose his temper.

“I wish that in our society will operate with the rule in which even if one loses, if the other person has such great qualities that I can accept it, that one humbly accepts the results.”

Kim Junsu’s principle (T/N: This is the same word that is used by Jaejoong when he describes his tattoo on his chest) is to try his best. (Junsu says that) it is because if he does so, even if it does not work out, he will be able to begin something new. When (the newspaper) asked whether he has had anything that he tried but would not work out, he said it was studying.

“In particular, math—as we finished the quadratic formula and moved on to trigonometry, I said: ‘Studying is something that even if one tries it just won’t work.’ (laugh)”

Kim Junsu is currently challenging himself at Popera. Time to time he is taking voice lessons (T/N: the article uses the word 성악 which is traditionally used to denote the kind of singing often done by opera actors). The transformation into a Popera singer from an idol dance singer is, to Junsu, as fervent as the task (T/N: literally, “homework”) that has been thrown on his twenties.

“The sensitivities that a song that is flavored by the (opera) voice is going to be different.”

(Junsu said that) in his thirties, he wishes to be a musician who writes songs. He said that he wants to be a composer who brings the thought of ‘I want to sing Kim Junsu’s song” when he is facing a certain situation.”

In Musical “Mozart” there is a song called “Golden Star.” It is—that you should break out of the tall walls of the castle and find the dream in the wide world and achieve it. In musicals, there are (naturally) parts which overlap with the lives of the audiences themselves and make them reflect upon themselves and bring them to tears. I will always protect you by your side, as an actor who, through musicals, comfort your lives and give you courage.”

Kim Junsu said that he wanted to become a singer who sings life, a musician who arouses memories and inspiration.
